Navigating Change: Brian’s Journey Forward

Client Spotlight: Brian Navigates New Opportunities After Vision Loss

Four years ago, Brian lost his sight due to glaucoma. The impact of losing his vision was initially heartbreaking, as he realized his need for greater assistance in the absence of sight. However, his declining eyesight caused him to reflect on his entire well-being, physically and mentally, and seek help.

Brian contacted the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired SC (ABVI) and was connected with one of their certified instructors who knew his local community well. After discussing his goals for independence, Brian and his ABVI instructor worked together during personalized training sessions. In addition to learning how to use his cellphone with greater independence through voiceover lessons, he gained the skills to safely and independently travel with a white cane. After several lessons, he could navigate his new apartment complex and the busy streets of his vibrant downtown with confidence.

It has taken him the last four years to adjust to the “new normal” of life without vision, but he claims his life is in better shape than before he lost his sight. Today, he practices jiujitsu weekly and recently started a media company with his podcast. Brian’s story is yet another testament to how vision rehabilitation with ABVI can be life-changing!
