LOWCOUNTRY, S.C. (WCIV) — Earlier this month, the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina, or ABVI, turned 90-years-old. One board member is using this big anniversary to reflect on his visual impairment journey and how ABVI helped him over the years.
“I don’t know how my mother would have made it with five blind children without the guidance and services that this organization was able to organize and provide for her,” said Ronald Coleman.
Coleman says that he is able to give a different perspective as an ABVI board member as he lives with his own visual impairment.
His father served in World War 2, where Coleman believes it all started.
“I believe he might have been exposed to some stuff that led to a unique pattern of blindness for his children and for no one else among his siblings,” said Coleman. “There was no blindness pattern prior to him going to the military and coming out.”
But with the help of ABVI, he was able to get the care he needed.
